Walker Creek Elementary is architecturally designed as a tool to facilitate the development of learning communities: learning that will be essential in the 21st century. The staff of Walker Creek Elementary will have a blank canvas on which to create an innovative and cutting edge learning environment. Walker Creek Elementary will be a place where students and teachers are excited about being there. Students will eagerly share with their peers and parent the learning they are experiencing. They will find a freedom in being able to choose how they will learn. Teachers will be energized as they seek innovative ways to present required learning. Parents will no longer thumb through stacks of worksheets but anticipate the completion of the their child’s next product. This will be a school that provides learning for all, including adults. Walker Creek Elementary will become the hub of the community, opening its doors not only to the students it serves, but to all of the citizens.
In 2005, our staff was hired based on a commitment to the Schlecty philosophy of Working on the Work. This is based on the premise that teachers do not plan lessons, but rather design lessons based on what we want our students to learn. WOW days have given teachers the opportunities to design lessons that are highly engaging to our students.
In 2009, teachers and staff went a step further and added depth and complexity to our lessons using Kaplan's philosophy of moving kids from merely students to scholars. Through the use and practice of scholarly behaviors, students become thinkers. We are looking forward to seeing the new levels of learning that will be achieved with the addition of this new framework for teaching and learning.
